Book Review: Liffey Rivers and the Mystery of the Winking Judge by Brenna Brigg

reviewed by Miriam E. Solinsky, Maguire Academy of Irish Dance

I like this book a lot. It is full with secrets and mystery. “Liffey, the wonder girl!” She travels from America to England and Ireland, manages to dance at a feis and solve two mysteries!!!!!!!!! It is a very good book.

Here is a summary for you: In Dublin, Liffey can’t wait to get her new solo dress. As part of the design, she had the dressmaker write her last name in the Ogham alphabet. Liffey wonders if the judge will notice, as that would break feis rules. In London, she notices that there is something wrong with the crowning portrait of Queen Elizabeth the first in the Tudor gallery. When she tries to tell the security guards, they think she is crazy. In the middle of all this, Liffey’s dad finds out that they are being followed and doesn’t tell Liffey!!!!! In Sligo Ireland, the judge at the prizewinner stage at the Feis is winking at everybody, but when Liffey comes on the stage his face turns to stone. That is no ordinary judge. Liffey has seen those eyes before… After an exiting feis Liffey and her dad climb Mt. Knocknarea. Almost at the top, they stop and Liffey’s dad says he wants to show her something, he says it is her mother, who died ten years earlier, on a tape. Then they watch the tape for a few seconds before Liffey stops it. She is not sure this is her mother. She says “Dad, this is not mom. I sat next to this lady on the plane to Seattle two years ago.”

Is this Liffeys mom, still alive, and Liffey doesn’t recognize her? Or is Liffey right, and it is someone else…

Read Liffey Rivers and the Mystery of the Winking Judge to find out!!!!!
